There is no one food that will magically protect your body from diabetes. But there are some foods that research shows can help raise healthy blood sugar levels over time. Keep reading to learn how to lower blood sugar immediately, what foods lower blood sugar, and what foods to eat when your blood sugar is higher than you want it to be.

What To Eat When You Have Low Blood Sugar

Before we begin, let’s review some definitions of what “normal blood sugar” means for people without diabetes:

Everyday Things That Spike Blood Sugar

* Very high blood sugar (> 250 mg/dL) can be a life-threatening condition if ketones are also present. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) can develop when blood sugar reaches this level. Discuss an action plan with your doctor if/when this happens. This includes knowing when it’s okay to stay home and manage your blood sugar and when you need to go to the emergency room.

**Exercise may not be suitable if blood sugar >250mg/dl. Talk to your doctor about this before trying to exercise when your blood sugar is too high.

What we should do when our blood sugar rises is different than discussing which foods help lower blood sugar over time. This discussion is often more relevant to insulin patients (type 1 diabetes and insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes), but can be applied to all types of diabetes.

In general, you can eat all the normal foods high in fat, fiber, and protein that you normally eat when your blood sugar is high. There’s no need to restrict food or cut out carbs at these times, but it’s worth being more aware of the foods you eat and really making sure we’re filling your plate with complex carbs and loading up on nutrient-dense protein sources.

Long-term strategies for lowering blood sugar in people with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes involve several different things. Some of them are related to food and some to other lifestyle factors.

Many people assume that lowering your blood sugar is all about the food you eat. But many other things can affect blood sugar levels. These include: activity levels, stress levels, hormones, etc. The following strategies have been shown to help lower blood sugar over time:

Monitoring Your Blood Sugar Level

Leafy greens are a rich source of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and fiber, and can easily be added to everything from copper to amylot. And as we discussed earlier, foods high in fiber help maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

One of the biggest myths that still exists about blood sugar control is that people who want to balance their blood sugar should not eat fruit. But the truth is, we have enough data to show that a diet rich in fruit not only protects against developing diabetes or type 2 diabetes, but can also help manage existing diabetes. In particular, studies have shown that adding grapes, blueberries and/or apples reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Eating whole citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapes, can promote healthy blood sugar and other related markers, such as insulin levels and hemoglobin A1c.

Avocados are not only delicious, they are rich in vegetable fats and fiber. Both nutrients slow down absorption and promote a steady supply of energy to the bloodstream…that is, blood sugar balance!
