How To Reduce Diabetes Risk – In celebration of American Diabetes Month, we’re highlighting how a lean, plant-based diet can help reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. 90% of that population don’t know they have the disease.
However, in most cases, type 2 diabetes can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes such as exercise, a healthy diet, and weight loss. One of the most important dietary changes is to cut down on meat and increase your consumption of plant foods such as nuts, whole grains and green vegetables.
We’ve teamed up with experts from the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future to create a series of new social media graphics promoting the benefits of plant-based options for reducing diabetes risk, with the new hashtag #DontLetDietBeatUs, to help people fight diets and diabetes.
There are many dietary options on the ADA website that are scientifically proven to reduce diabetes risk and help you lose weight. ADA also offers vegetarian cookbooks with recipe inspiration here. Our Diabetes Prevention Program has a variety of resources designed to help people at risk of type 2 diabetes manage or prevent their disease through a combination of healthy eating, exercise and stress management.

Around 22,000 people with diabetes die prematurely each year in the UK, and 5 million people in the UK are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
While type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented and is not lifestyle related, type 2 diabetes can be prevented with lifestyle changes.
A Healthier You: The NHS Diabetes Prevention Program identifies people at high risk and helps them make positive lifestyle changes to reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
If you have not been referred to Healthy You by your GP, but are interested in the service, the first step is to determine if you are at high risk. Go to the ‘Know Your Risk’ tool at www.diabetes.org.uk/risk to see if you are at risk for type 2.
The program is a partnership between NHS England, Public Health England and Diabetes UK working with private providers and local authorities. This service is provided in your area by WW (formerly known as Weightwatchers).
